“It does not pay to go deep if the surface is not well organized.” - Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.
This Introductory Session is very special. It is where we first get to know each other. We begin by discussing your experiences and your goals. Then, we talk about your history and assess how you feel in your body right now along with your current range of motion in various joints. You will also have an option of taking before photographs if that is of interest to you. Then, we will move on to Session 1 of the Balanced Body series to help you get acquainted with the work and how it feels.
Session 1 focuses on the superficial fascial layer of the body - what I sometimes call the “wetsuit.” Human bodies have layers and this series works layer by layer starting with the outer layer. If the outer layer is locked down tight, nothing in the deeper layers has room to move. In this way, we respect the body and mind by giving them time to shift and adjust.
Intention for Session 1: Free the Breath
Terrain: ribcage, spine, sternum, shoulders, neck; lateral pelvis/leg, hamstrings
Get a sense of lift in your body. We will work on the superficial fascia around the ribcage, spine, sternum, shoulders, arms, and neck to encourage easier breathing and flexibility. We will also work around the hips, down the side of the legs, and through the hamstrings to encourage freer hip movement.
Each session has a theme and the theme of this session is OPEN. Open your breath. Open to a new experience. Open to the messages from your body. Open the superficial layer to make room for changes to come.
Thoughts to consider in preparation for this session:
What inspires you/is your passion?
When you breathe, is it easier to inhale or exhale?
Do you ever find yourself holding your breath? When?
Are you open to change?
As there is movement involved in Structural Integration sessions, make sure to wear underwear/bra. Boxer briefs work better than boxers and standard bras or bandeaus work better than sports bras.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you!
